the high Arctic. It is not part of Nunavut but rather chose to remain as part of the North

History
Traditionally the Copper Inuit have lived on Holman Island. The
explorers Franklin and Collinson were the first Europeans to visit the area. In the early
1900s the Inuit would hunt on Banks Island and spend the summer on Victoria Island. The
first Hudson Bay Company post was opened in 1923 and finally settled in the location where
the community of Holman is today. Later that year Inuit started to settle in the area and
the community developed.
Today the community's economy is linked heavily with the arts and
crafts industry with printmaking being key. Trapping, hunting and fishing are still
practiced and to a lesser degree oil and gas exploration. Local services including taxis,
grocery stores, hotels and outfitters are also key to residents and visitors alike.
The community is accessible by air from Inuvik year round and bulk
supplies and food are barged in during the summer months.
